Henry Louis Gates, Jr. on President-Elect Obama

The essay is titled "In Our Lifetime."  Here's the link.  It's also featured on Slate.

After one day of celebrating, I am already worried about the cohesiveness of the Obama coalition. Here in California, Prop 8 passed 52% to 48%, eliminating marriage rights for LGBT people. The elephant in the room is that LGBT Americans voted overwhelmingly for Obama, yet African Americans voted overwhelmingly for Prop 8. I look forward to the day when "In Our Lifetime" also applies to gay Americans.

I think the passage of Prop 8 is a travesty, but I also don't believe it's necessarily related to the Obama coalition. There is no doubt that LGBT deserves full and equal rights, but I believe this is a separate issue from the practical questions of an Obama government and subsequent elections.
